Nyerere National Park fees at a glance
Park fees in Nyerere are charged per person per day and depend on your category: citizens of East Africa, expatriates and residents of Tanzania, or all other visitors. Vehicles, boat trips, walks and camping carry their own fees. The amounts on this page are the 2023/24 tariff. Check the current amount before you book, and ask whether your safari price already includes the park fees. Many packages do, some do not.
If you are still choosing a trip, start with Nyerere safaris and game drives or the safaris from Dar es Salaam.

Vehicle fees by weight
Charged per vehicle and based on empty weight, not on the number of passengers. These amounts are from the 2022/23 tariff.
| Empty weight | Tanzania and East Africa registered | Registered abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 2,000 kg | TZS 20,000 | $40 |
| 2,001 to 3,000 kg | TZS 35,000 | $150 |
| 3,001 to 7,000 kg | TZS 60,000 | $200 |
| 7,001 to 10,000 kg | TZS 150,000 | $300 |
| Over 10 tonnes, prior permission needed | TZS 300,000 | $500 |
Open vehicles carried a 50 percent surcharge in that tariff. Commercially registered East African vehicles can be charged differently, so check the current vehicle fee. If you travel with an operator, the vehicle fee is usually part of the quote.
Activity and camping fees
Added to the daily conservation fee. Amounts are per person.
Boat safari
$20 for non-East African visitors and residents, TZS 10,000 for East African citizens (2023/24 tariff). This is the park's fee for the activity, not the price of a full boat trip with crew and transfer. See the Rufiji boat safari guide.
Walking safari
A short walk of 1 to 4 hours is $20, a long walk of over 4 hours is $25 for non-East African visitors and residents. East African citizens pay TZS 5,000 and TZS 10,000. Children from 12 pay $10 and $15, or TZS 2,500 and TZS 5,000 (2022/23 tariff). Walks need a ranger, advance booking and a permit. Details are on the walking safari page.
Public camping
$30 per adult and $5 per child per night for non-East African visitors and residents, TZS 5,000 and TZS 2,500 for East African citizens, children under 5 free (2022/23 tariff).
Special camping and camp or lodge concession
Special campsites and the concession fee for camps and lodges cost $50 to $60 per adult per night, depending on category and season (2023/24 tariff). The fee is usually part of what a camp charges you. More on camps and lodges.
How to pay and what to bring
Payment options and proof of category.
Payment methods
TANAPA accepts Visa and Mastercard at the gate, mobile money, bank transfer for tour operators, online reservation and the government payment system GePG. Do not rely on cash alone, and keep a card with you.
Time covered
An overnight permit covers 24 hours from entry. A day-trip permit covers 12 daylight hours. Both allow you to leave and re-enter the park during that time.
Proof of category
The resident rate needs a residence or work permit. The East African rate needs a valid passport or ID. A holiday stay does not qualify you for a resident rate. Schools and colleges can ask for a group discount in advance.

Nyerere National Park fees: frequently asked questions
How much is the entry fee for Nyerere National Park?
Under the 2023/24 tariff, an adult visitor from outside East Africa pays $70 per day in the main season and $60 in the low season, and a child aged 5 to 15 pays $20. Check the current amount before you book.
Do safari prices include park fees?
It depends on the operator. Some quotes include the conservation fee, vehicle fee and concession fee, others show them separately. Ask for a written breakdown.
Can I pay by card?
Yes. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at the gate. Mobile money, bank transfer for operators, online reservation and GePG are also accepted.
Are park fees charged per day or per visit?
Per person per day. A permit covers 24 hours from entry for overnight stays or 12 daylight hours for a day trip, with multiple entries during that time.
Do I get a resident rate on holiday?
No. The resident rate needs a residence or work permit. A holiday stay in Tanzania does not qualify.
How much is the vehicle fee?
It depends on the empty weight of the vehicle, not on the number of passengers. Under the 2022/23 tariff, a foreign-registered vehicle up to 2,000 kg paid $40, with higher amounts for heavier ones and a 50 percent surcharge for open vehicles. On a booked safari the vehicle fee is usually part of the quote.
